Asbestos Safety: A New Course Introduced to Help Workers Stay Safe from Asbestos
Asbestos Safety: SafeWork NSW, in partnership with the Office of the Building Commissioner, NSW Environment Protection Authority, and Local Government NSW, has introduced an online training program focused on Asbestos Awareness and Safety. This initiative aims to enhance the knowledge of tradespeople and other professionals about safeguarding themselves while handling asbestos-containing materials.
Aligned with the primary objectives of the NSW Asbestos Coordination Committee (NACC), this course launch coincides with National Asbestos Awareness Week, commemorating Australia's 20-year prohibition on the production, usage, and importation of asbestos.
Despite
the ban, structures constructed before 1990 might still contain asbestos.
Every
year, approximately 4,000 Australians perish due to asbestos-related illnesses,
a number significantly exceeding the average annual road accidents.
SafeWork
NSW has curated an in-depth and interactive course to protect individuals
working directly or indirectly with asbestos-containing materials from exposure
to its harmful fibers.
The online
program encompasses identification methods for asbestos-containing materials,
safe handling practices, preventive measures, the health repercussions of
asbestos exposure, and more.

Asbestos Safety: A New Course Introduced to Help Workers Stay Safe from Asbestos
Employers
who endorse their employees' completion of this course fulfill their legal
obligations to provide asbestos awareness training to workers who may encounter
asbestos during their duties.
Interested
participants can enroll in the course via the Construct NSW Digital Learning
Platform.
The NACC
collaborates with various NSW state agencies and other entities to enhance the
oversight, monitoring, and response to asbestos-related issues across the
region through joint programs and partnerships.
Trent
Curtin, the Head of SafeWork NSW, emphasized, "Despite asbestos being
present in one-third of Australian homes, it's crucial for all tradespeople to
proficiently identify and handle asbestos-containing materials."
"We
strongly encourage employers to ensure their workers undertake this course,
especially those likely to encounter asbestos in their work, including
plumbers, electricians, renovators, building trades, painters, home maintenance
professionals, and others."
"The
Asbestos Awareness and Safety Course provide workers with comprehensive
insights into ensuring their safety around asbestos, simultaneously ensuring
employers fulfill their responsibility by providing adequate training."
